Square Enix has confirmed it is bringing Final Fantasy
VII back to the PC, 15 years after its original PC and
PlayStation release.
The Final
Fantasy VII PC website, registered by Square Enix,
highlights only that the game is "coming soon", but teases several
new features. The game will get unlockable achievements, "cloud"
saves (hopefully the pun is
intended) as well as something called Character Booster.
Character Booster will allow players to automatically max out
their in-game health, experience and Gil (Final
Fantasy cash, to the uninitiated) in order to cruise more
easily through the game's legendary story. It's not clear if that
will involve micropayments or not.
Cloud saves will let players save their games to Square Enix
servers, so it can be continued on more than one home PC or laptop.
This is not dissimilar to
Valve's Steam Cloud on the Steam digital distribution platform,
and comparable features on Xbox Live and
PlayStation Plus.
These three features never existed on the PC or PlayStation
release of the game. But "PC" is the keyword here though, as Square
Enix has not confirmed a Mac OS X
release. (Boo!)
It will also be released via the Square Enix store only, via
download. No Steam, no Games For Windows, and no price has been
confirmed. The game will also land on the PS Vita in the near
future.
We have contacted Square Enix for more information and will
update this story as and when it arrives.
